THE CHALLENGE: The unglazed tile used in the public areas of the offices of the Australian National Broadcasting Authority in Canberra, Australia became slippery with tracked in water during inclement weather. A permanently effective, low maintenance treatment was required to render these areas safe and attractive. A complication was that the public areas are in continuous use which necessitated odour-free materials.
THE SOLUTION: The floor was prepared for coating over a single weekend by vigorous scrubbing with a standard janitorial cleaner then coated with BIO-SEAL™ 196 plus white Aluminum Oxide abrasive.
The two-coat system comprised a base coat of BIO-SEAL™ 196 applied by squeegee and roller at 110 sq.ft./gallon with 36 mesh white aluminum oxide broadcast and back-rolled into it. After an overnight cure a second coat of BIO-SEAL™ 196 was applied at a spreading rate of 160 sq.ft./gallon to soften the texture of the abrasive and allow easy mopping while retaining an efficient slip resistance.
Public visitors and station personnel remained in the building during this application and the complete absence of odours ensured no problems or complaints during the application.

THE RESULT: The once slippery floor has been upgraded to a glossy and attractive slip-resistant surface. Maintenance requirements are minimal compared to the original surface which was prone to staining and dirt retention. The installation was made over a single weekend with no disruption of normal activities and cured for unrestricted use before start of business on the Monday morning.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: BIO-SEAL™ 196 a colour stabilized, 100% solids epoxy coating with outstanding all-around physical and chemical properties. It cures to a high gloss finish free from the exudation or "blushing" common to most other solvent-free epoxy coatings. It is odour-free and extremely water tolerant.
