BIO-DECK™ 190 RESTORES TOWVEYOR® TRACKS IN BUSY MATERIALS HANDLING FACILITY.

THE CHALLENGE: A materials handling plant on the U.S. East Coast utilizes a computer controlled, "Towveyor®" track system to efficiently transport materials around the plant. Many hard polymer wheeled trolleys weighing up to 1,000 lbs each roll endlessly on this track. Experience has shown that ordinary concrete shows heavy wear after several months of this service. Accordingly, this track had been constructed with a cementitious "wear resistant" topping. Unfortunately this topping had failed disastrously after only a few years of service leaving a noisy and dangerous heavily rutted surface. Repair using the original cementitious product was out of the question because of the 20+ day curing required before service.

The tracks had to be repaired with minimum down time in a facility which was fully staffed necessitating odour-free, quick curing products.

THE SOLUTION: BIO-DECK™ 190, a custom formulated extreme abrasion resistant concrete repair compound, was specified for this repair. BIO-DECK™ 190 was formulated expressly for Towveyor® track repair, it cures rapidly to allow return to service as quickly as four (4) hours after installation. It is odour-free during installation and curing and requires no special equipment other than concrete preparation tools required to remove debris and existing failing toppings.

The installation crew mobilized on site in advance of the agreed start time and commenced surface preparation as soon as the Towveyor® system was shut down. Pneumatic chisels were used to remove the failed cementitious topping and oversized aggregate in the 10" wide tracks. After this, the tracks were abrasive blasted using Blastrac® equipment.

The BIO-DECK™ 190 is supplied in a "kit" of blended aggregates, epoxy resin and curing agent all contained within a 5-gallon pail. Blending all ingredients within this pail using a ½” “Jiffy” style mixer makes a just-pourable repair material. The mixed material was poured into the prepared track and roughly spread out -- natural self-leveling then took over to make a smooth surface. No further attention was required after installation and the repair was cured sufficiently for unrestricted use within four (4) hours.

RESULT: The BIO-DECK™ 190 installation was made on time and on budget. A benefit of the smooth surface was a dramatic reduction in the normal noise from clattering trolleys running on the old cementitious tracks.
